by | Jul 27, 2023 | Biology, School of Biological Sciences, Women in Science

Convocation season is here again! In this series, Science@NTU gets to know the 2023 CoS valedictorians. They give a quick overview of their time in CoS, and also offer a few words of advice on transitioning into the next phase of life. First up, we have Fiona Fan from the School of Biological Sciences.

How did you end up studying the Double Major in Biomedical Sciences and Biobusiness?

I always knew that biology was my passion, so I decided to pursue the Diploma in Biomedical Sciences after secondary education. During my 3 years of polytechnic studies, I realized that while I love science, a laboratory-based job is not the path that aligns with my interests. Being a bubbly and outgoing person, I thrive on human interactions and seek constant new challenges.

That was when I discovered the perfect fit: a double major that bridges science and business. It seemed like the ideal course to pursue, especially considering the opportunity for an exchange program at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) as I believe an overseas experience during my undergraduate studies will undoubtedly be beneficial for my personal and academic growth.

What did you enjoy most during your four years in NTU SBS?

My fondest memories during my time in SBS will undoubtedly revolve around the Biological Sciences Club. Stepping up as the club president was a way for me to push my own boundaries. As an individual who lacked much self-confidence in my younger days, I truly felt that the leadership experience groomed me as an individual. I was very fortunate to be involved in numerous event planning initiatives, and even got to contribute to the establishment of the first-ever Clade system in the entire College of Science.

The journey was not without challenges, but I was surrounded by like-minded people and supportive faculty members, fostering lifelong friendships. Witnessing the smiles on the faces of SBS students definitely showed me the impact of our work and it was an extremely rewarding experience. The sense of purpose and leadership that BS Club has instilled in me will accompany me throughout life.

Which experience had the greatest impact on you?

My exchange experience at the CBS left a lasting impact on me. Stepping foot into a foreign country alone definitely felt intimidating initially, however, I embraced it as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. The education environment at CBS was refreshingly different. Classrooms emphasized more on group discussions and real-life case studies. The dynamic learning environment pushed me to share my ideas freely and collaborate with classmates from various backgrounds.

Interacting with students all around the world gave me the opportunity to immerse in various cultures and make new friendships. Having to live with my family members also sharpened my independence and adaptability. From simple things like cooking and doing laundry, I have become a more independent individual. I am truly thankful for this experience!

What’s your next step after graduation?

I started as an Analyst in IQVIA recently, focusing on Life Sciences and Healthcare Consulting. The job scope is an exciting blend of science and business, perfect for what I chose to study at NTU!

Any words of advice to students who intend to study Science?

  1. Stay curious. Science is a journey driven by curiosity. Embrace the joy of asking questions and seeking answers.
  2. Stay resilient. Science can be is a journey that sometimes sees no end. Embrace failure a natural part of experimentation and learning.
  3. Stay ethical. The integrity and honesty of scientific research are paramount. Always stay true to yourself and your results.

What advice do you have for your peers who are graduating this year?

Drawing from my valedictorian speech, I want to emphasize that science is not solely about theories, facts, hypotheses, and experimentation. The true essence of science is critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. These skills are transferable to almost any field and extend beyond the boundaries of any specific field.

I encourage you to never confine yourselves within industry boundaries set by others. Be fearless in exploring the intersections of science with various disciplines and seek out opportunities beyond conventional pathways. With passion, dedication, and the right attitude, I believe we can make a difference!

Provide a quote that inspires you.

“Fake it till you make it” is a quote that I often use to motivate myself. At first glance, I know this quote seems to advocate deception and may appear very casual. However, to me, the essence of this mantra-like quote lies in the spirit of resilience and confidence. When faced with daunting challenges, it encourages me to stay positive and maintain an “I can do it!” attitude.
