In this series, Science@NTU gets to know the 2023 CoS valedictorians. They give a quick overview of their time in CoS, and also offer a few words of advice on transitioning into the next phase of life. Next up, we have Samantha Tan from the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
What drew you to pursue a science degree and why Chemistry specifically?
Since I was a child, I have always been drawn to TV shows that involve crime and medicine, and always wondered how science was used to solve their mysteries. As I progressed towards my tertiary education, I started learning more about the applications of chemistry and biological chemistry, which answered some of those questions. With that, I was very fascinated and decided to pursue Chemistry and Biological Chemistry in NTU College of Science.
Throughout the course of my programme, I have seen how chemistry is applicable in many aspects of life. Not only have I gained chemistry knowledge, but also picked up important problem-solving skills that are relevant in real life.
Chemistry is a versatile field that offers a wide range of career opportunities, from pharmaceuticals, forensic chemistry and to education. It is a versatile subject, and is the foundation of many sciences. Therefore, if you are interested in unraveling mysteries, chemistry is the place to be!
What have you enjoyed most so far in the Chemistry programme?
I enjoyed the Chemistry Lab modules most, because that is actually where I developed many friendships! As all of us were frantically juggling 2-3 experiments over 6 hours – we ended up supporting and helping each other, in order to complete the experiments in a timely manner. Indeed, tough times bring people closer together. I love the supportive community in the Chemistry cohort.
Which of your experiences has had the greatest impact on you?
The greatest impact over my four years here would have to be the opportunity to represent my school as the club President, where I acted as the voice of students and advocated for their collective interests. With the team, we successfully executed numerous student activities from meaningful social activities, to community service and to academic support.
Eventually, the efforts of the committee were recognised with the CoLab4Good special mentions award. This committee has made me learn so much more about my own potential. I was given the privilege to also understand the fundamentals of a great teamwork. Not to mention, the many talented people in the committee that I have met, are the ones that have impacted me the most.
Why should students choose NTU College of Science and what advice do you have for those considering joining the College?
University is literally one of the last few stages in life where we can have crazy fun, still make mistakes, discover and grow while experiencing the most out of everything. I believe NTU College of Science is the best place to start your next chapter in life.
Provide a quote that inspires you.
One quote that empowered me through my many years in education is, “You can’t change the environment you are born in, but you can change the environment you want to live in”. Whatever situation you are in, do not allow it to hinder your pursuit of greatness.
Instead, rise above your circumstances and change your environment which would enable you to embrace your fullest potential and become the best version of yourself.
