KK Phua Gold Medal – Zhang Tianyu

KK Phua Gold Medal – Zhang Tianyu

Zhang Tianyu has been awarded the highly esteemed KK Phua Gold Medal in recognition of his remarkable accomplishments in the field of cryptology. Zhang’s journey into this fascinating realm began during his summer break, when an internship at the Shield Lab of Huawei Singapore ignited his passion for cryptology.

As he entered his third year at NTU, Zhang’s commitment to the subject led him to join Associate Professor Guo Jian’s team. His dedication quicky bore fruit as he embarked on a research project focused on quantum cryptanalysis on block ciphers for the Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus (URECA). Zhang’s work did not go unnoticed, and NTU honoured him as a President Research Scholar for his commendable research achievements.

Zhang’s explorations continued to unfold in his Final Year Project (FYP), where he further delved into the intricate world of cryptology. His project evolved around replicating and refining the latest techniques in the automatic search of Meet-in-the-Middle attacks. This innovative approach was then applied to Rjindael-based hashing, the foundation of the widely adopted and renowned Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

Over the past two years, Zhang’s unwavering determination to advance in the field of cryptology has grown stronger. This dedication led him to accept the prestigious Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship (NPGS). Under the mentorship of Associate Prof. Guo Jian, Zhang is poised to make further significant contributions to the world of cryptologic research.

His recognition with the KK Phua Gold Medal is a testament to his outstanding achievements in cryptology.

The School warmly congratulate the winners.
