The College of Science held the annual Making and Tinkering (M&T) exhibition on 6 and 7 December 2024, which showcased innovative projects from students in the CoS M&T course. The projects are a culmination of students’ efforts over the last semester to develop machines or technology that help tackle real world problems.

Open to students from various disciplines, the course gives them a chance to collaborate and contribute knowledge gleaned from their respective fields. Students are able to freely explore in their quest for solutions, are encouraged to take risks, and to see failure as a chance from which to grow further.

Held at the MAS Atrium in SPMS, the 2024 M&T exhibition featured projects from 14 groups, with builds that ranged from a pillow which enhances sleep quality via its cooling mechanism and the integrated vibration/audio alarm function to a cone-laying robot which dispenses cones in a straight line, for roller blading practice.

Guests from companies like Pepperl+Fuchs, In.Genius, Science Center and Google were invited to come and judge the students’ projects alongside NTU faculty members. The judges awarded the following projects:

Best Project: Fork N Spoon – A 3 DOF Tabletop 3D Photogrammetry Device

Best Craftsmanship: Mario Cart – A remote-controlled heavy-duty trolley

Best Craftsmanship: Yuan Yang – An automatic titration machine that detects colour changes in acid-base titrations and automatically calculates the volume of titrant dispensed

Best Idea: Organic Ideas – An automated solid dispensing accessory compatible with existing analytical balances

Best Idea: Paw Patrol – Tackling canine obesity, via a user friendly solution which can easily track the changes in body composition for dogs
