by | Jul 23, 2025 | Asian School of the Environment

In this series, Science@NTU gets to know the 2025 CoS valedictorians. They give a quick overview of their time in CoS, and also offer a few words of advice on transitioning into a new phase of life. First up, we have Dana Yam from the Asian School of the Environment.

How did you end up studying Environmental Earth Systems Science?

I’ve always loved being out in nature and have always had a strong sense of wanting to help protect it. Environmental Earth Systems Science at ASE felt like the programme which would equip me with the technical skills needed in the field, and I was attracted to the hands-on learning opportunities provided by ASE.

I also enjoyed biology and geography in school, and ASE felt like the perfect way to continue pursuing a little bit of both.

What did you enjoy most during your four years in NTU ASE?

I enjoyed the community at ASE! From our professor to my peers, everyone was warm-hearted and friendly. Our professors created a supportive learning environment where we felt comfortable asking questions and could actively engage in the classes they taught. My peers were always willing to lend a helping hand in classes I struggled with. I also had a great time with them out on fieldtrips or just listening to their stories when we were together.

Which experience had the greatest impact on you?

Probably my semester exchange in New Zealand, as I was completely independent and travelled there without any family or friends. Being alone allowed me to immerse myself in new cultures and ways of life. New Zealand also has really unique biodiversity, hence different strategies for conservation which complement what I have learnt in NTU.

I will also say that being a part of NTU Lifesaving made my time at NTU more exciting. It was always fun getting in the pool with my friends and encouraging each other through hard training sessions and competitions.

What’s your next step after graduation?

I will be working in the government sector.

Any words of advice to students who intend to study Science?

To be curious and have the courage to pursue the different opportunities offered at NTU. Whether it be research projects or club activities, you never know what you will end up enjoying! These opportunities and experiences are not only a great way to broaden your perspectives, but also can serve as fun activities when school gets too stressful.

What advice do you have for your peers who are graduating this year?

Just keep being the great people you already are!
