  1. Congratulations on receiving the Shell Eastern Petroleum Gold Medal cum Cash Award! What was your first reaction upon hearing the news, and what does this award mean to you at this point in your journey?

I was initially surprised to hear about it, as I wasn’t even aware of its existence. Still, it felt incredibly affirming, like a reflection of the consistent effort I’ve put in over the past four years. I’m also grateful to Shell for sponsoring the award and recognising students in this way.

  1. This award recognises outstanding performance in SPMS. Could you share what you believe made your academic or research journey stand out? Whether it’s a project, a consistent effort, or a defining moment—tell us what you’re most proud of.

I don’t think there was any one defining moment that stood out, but I’m proud to have maintained a consistent level of effort each semester. I also made it a point to stay open-minded and continue learning new things and skills along the way.

  1. What was one challenge you encountered during your time at SPMS, and how did you overcome it?

One challenge I faced was balancing academic work with commitments outside of school. It was mentally taxing trying to manage both. But with careful time management and support from friends in my cohort, I was able to set reasonable priorities and push through. I learned that many challenges can’t be tackled alone, and that sometimes, it’s okay not to charge ahead blindly. Some things are more manageable when approached thoughtfully.

  1. Was there a person, course, or experience at SPMS that left a lasting impact on you?

I think both the faculty and friends I met at SPMS played a part in making this journey meaningful. The teaching faculty are clearly passionate about their fields, and the students who persevere through each semester of academic rigour each bring unique and insightful perspectives on the world.

  1. Looking back on your time at SPMS, what’s a memory or moment you’ll carry with you?

Ironically, one of my most treasured memories was a time I spent away from NTU during my GEM Explorer overseas exchange. It gave me a chance to experience a different educational environment and immerse myself in another culture. I met people from different backgrounds and broadened my view of the world. To me, university isn’t just about studying. It’s also a time to explore and discover new perspectives.

  1. What advice would you give to students who hope to follow a similar path?

Do what you do for your own sake, not because someone expects it of you or out of concern for what others might think. Let your actions be guided by your own beliefs. No one else can live your life for you. The results might feel imperfect, but they’re a testament to your own effort and struggle, something no one else can replicate.
