ASE Professor David Wardle has been elected as a Foreign Member to the Academia Europaea in their 2020 round. Academia Europaea is a prestigious pan-European Academy with the purpose of “…advancement and propagation of excellence in scholarship in the humanities, law, the economic, social, and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, and all branches of natural and technological sciences anywhere in the world for the public benefit and for the advancement of the education of the public of all ages.” The Academy provides advice to governments and international organisations in scientific matters, and furthers interdisciplinary and international research.

Founded in 1988, with headquarters in London, UK, the Academia Europaea has around 3,500 members, which includes around 150 Foreign Members that are based outside Europe. Invitations are made after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field.

Professor Wardle is one of three NTU faculty that are currently elected members of the Academia Europaea, and the only member of the academy that works in the environment, earth and ecology realm based in Southeast Asia.
