Meet Chua Ying Xuan, NTU Asian School of the Environment undergrad who represented Singapore at the Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative (YSEALI) Fall 2019. The programme, sponsored by the US embassy, consists of a five-week academic residency hosted by the East West Center to learn about the Hawaii, California and federal government’s policies and approaches towards environmental management.
Jonathan Ng is a second-year Nanyang Research Scholar at the NTU School of Biological Sciences (SBS), where he is currently working on his Ph.D. project, involving the development of machine learning models to identify the functions of plant genes, such as those involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.
Making a mark for Women in Science (Part 2) – Meet NTU School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences PhD student Wu Lishu, who is a recipient of the 2020 Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology (WiEST) Conference Grant. Currently studying 2D materials, she sheds some light on her research, and her thoughts on women in science.
Meet NTU School of Biological Sciences student Samuel Loo! Samuel took part in the one week summer programme in Kobe University, Japan in 2019. Samuel had the opportunity to experience research in Kobe University, sea training on the University’s training ship Fukaemaru, and even got his hands dirty with agricultural training!
Making a mark for Women in Science: In the spirit of International Women’s Day held recently in March, we meet some of the recipients of the 2020 Women in Engineering, Science, and Technology (WiEST) Conference Grant. First up is NTU School of Biological Sciences PhD student Chinmayi Prasanna. She shares with us how she got to where she is now, and her views on women in science.
Jing Xuan took part in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) programme in 2019. In this year’s trip, besides top science & technology organisations, students had the opportunity to visit Minamisanriku, a town that was one of the worst hit during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Jing Xuan shares with us her takeaways from her meaningful experience in Japan!
Song Lin’s project on raising awareness for the Mekong Delta environmental crisis through a video-making workshop won him the AY2018/19 OG Distinguished Undergraduate Student Award (DUSA). He also went on a 6-month stint in Shanghai as part of the Overseas Entrepreneurship Programme (OEP). He shares with us his experience in these two exciting ventures!
In second place of the CoS Science Communication Writing Competition is Wong Minn Lin from the Asian School of the Environment! She wrote about “Lessons in climate change, learned from the past.” Congratulations, Minn Lin!
And the third winner of the Merit Prize in the CoS Science Communication Writing Competition, Devika Menon from the School of Biological Sciences! She wrote about “L-P Polymerase Inhibitors- The Possible Doom Of Pneumonia.” Congratulations, Devika!
