“Kopitiam”, as many locals affectionately call the traditional coffee shop found in the heartlands, has always been a common gathering place for people to exchange news and comments on various topics whilst enjoying their meals.

Tapping on this concept that is usually popular with senior citizens in particular, the students of Enactus NTU developed a new social entrepreneurship model to not only enable the ageing population in Singapore to remain current with the help of technology but also allow corporations to better access their target demographics, called the “Cyber Kop.IT.iam”.

What sets this programme apart is that it will be equipped with technology gadgets and software that are suitable for the elderly that can help them to communicate with their grandchildren, monitor their health, and keep them entertained. Students volunteers will be engaged as helpers to guide them on how to leverage technology to access news and other services.

The concept for Cyber Kop.IT.iam ideally creates a win-win situation, whereby the older generation benefits from the technological offerings to improve their quality of life, and companies are able to reap marketing value.

I have ample opportunities to test run ideas to get feedback. The feeling of managing a project with real, sustainable social impact is simply enriching. Moreover, I get to work with equally passionate teammates who share the same vision as me- to create a better society for ageing. I wish to leave a legacy behind and make a difference in today’s world.

I have put to use the skills that I’ve learnt in school, such as presenting to corporate organisations, forecasting financial numbers, and contributing positively in a team. The joy of seeing your own start-up sowing its first seed and subsequently growing in strength is truly indescribable. Furthermore, I learnt the importance of contributing back to society. The joyous faces that you see make all the effort worthwhile.
