There are several concerns involving low-income families, and these include accessibility to proper food and hygienic living environments. WSC has always provided support to people from all walks of life and 2015 kicked-off with a food donation drive. The intention was to provide a prosperous Lunar New Year to low income families residing in Boon Lay.

Preparation for this activity began early January with the committee creating awareness among the NTU community. Aside from collecting donations to purchase food and necessities, flyers were also distributed in Boon Lay to encourage residents to give back to their community by donating canned food.

The response from the residents towards this campaign was enthusiastic and extremely encouraging. During collection day, residents who were not home even made an effort to leave bags of canned goods outside their doors, with notes saying that it was left for the food drive. A resident who missed the doorbell even chased after student volunteers with her bag of donations. It was this positive response that spurred volunteers on.

Collected food was sorted according to food type and expiry dates, and then repacked into ration packs so that each family would have an equal share.  Close to 300 student volunteers participated in this drive, which benefitted 250 families residing in Boon Lay.

Great friendship have been built and we have spread the spirit of volunteerism in NTU.
