Many might not know but PYAW actually means ‘HAPPY’ in Burmese!

With the tone and aim defined and title set in stone, the rest is history.

For 16 days in June 2016, 21 student leaders from the International Service Division of NTU Rotaract Club embarked on this challenge to put a smile on the faces of the beautiful children in Witharkar Nunnery Teaching School, Yangon, Myanmar where they made friendships and memories to last a lifetime.

These volunteers typically spent their day teaching English to the students in interactive ways such as song and dance. In between, they also included recreational games and other handicraft activities to engage and interest the children. Everyone particularly enjoyed the cultural exchanging through food and games. The team even cooked Singapore’s Curry Chicken for them which they realized tasted almost like their traditional Burmese dish!

The team was especially touched by the enthusiasm of the children and hospitality of the Burmese people. The volunteers broke through both language and personal barriers, pouring in blood, sweat, and tears to engage and bring joy to the children.

In my heart, Witharkhar takes up a very special place, my memories and my thoughts. This special place has taught me to give more, share more, care more, love more and feel more for others.Ignatius Junxian Wong, Student Volunteer
