Singaporean youth volunteers are familiar faces in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, and in December 2017, the community hosted a group of NTU Uni-Y volunteers who were there for their International Service Programme. Despite communication barriers, villagers were eager to interact with the team and the team was met by warm hospitality.

To help boost the confidence level of the students, volunteers conducted career and public speaking workshops for Grade 11 and 12 high school students of Chun Nat High School. The intent of the workshops was to not only help boost the confidence of the students, but also to give them the opportunity to interact with volunteers and practice their English and conversational skills.

While there, volunteers also helped with simple school refurbishments and painting of a wall mural, which the students enthusiastically helped to paint too. Volunteers also took part in a Rice Soup Programme, distributing food to rural villages around the area.

Overall, it was a successful and meaningful trip for the team, and many came home with new perspectives.

“We are indeed humbled and would not trade this experience for anything else.” Kester Chong, NTU Uni-Y Volunteer
