On 24 March 2018, 20 residents from Metta Home made their way to Singapore Chinese Garden for an outing in the great outdoors. Aimed at giving residents an opportunity to appreciate nature, this was the second outdoor outing organised by NTU Welfare Services Club Overseas Volunteering Expedition. Even though the weather at the start of the touting was not in their favour, residents remained energetic and enthusiastic as volunteers tried their best to entertain the them with various games.

Once the rain stopped, it was hard to miss the excitement in the air. For many residents this was their first time visiting the Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum and the highlight of the day for most, was the chance to see more than 200 turtles and tortoises from over 60 different species!

At the museum, residents also toured exhibits of toys, ornaments and tableware created in celebration of the museum’s namesake. Both residents and volunteers had a great time.

“Interacting with Metta Home clients at Singapore Chinese Garden was an entirely different experience as we usually conduct activities with them, within their residential compound. The clients were free to explore the gardens and enjoy the wonders of nature. Bringing the clients outdoor was a vast environment change which was enjoyable for them.” Lam Wei Han, Volunteer

About NTU Welfare Services Club Overseas Volunteering Expedition

Overseas Volunteering Expedition (OVE), a Special Project under Welfare Services Club, aims to provide individuals with the passion for volunteering, a platform to benefit less-privileged communities beyond geographical boundaries. Striving to achieve sustainability through projects that would benefit communities in the long run, OVE hopes to promote the spirit of volunteerism by embarking on an overseas volunteering expedition that provides students with new insights and experiences. Beyond their main expedition, OVE strives to promote volunteerism in the Singapore context. Hence, the team also collaborates with Metta Home through bi-weekly sessions and events to do their part in serving the local community.
