A team of 23 members from Overseas Volunteering Expedition 2018, a special project under NTU Welfare Services Club, worked tirelessly on a housing project in Hope Village Prey Veng, Cambodia, hoping to make a difference.

Other than completing two houses within four days for two different families, the team also successfully set up a primary school that lacked clean drinking water, and a UV Water system within three days. Old mosquito nets in the village were also replaced with brand new ones.

Aside from building works, the team introduced basic business planning to children at Hope Village in a bid to spark their interest in entrepreneurship. The team also spent time teaching the children how to bake fairy cakes and shared a local favourite delight – kaya, that can be used for desserts. The children were gifted with a brand new table-tennis table that the team bought for the village!

On the Cultural Night, the team wanted to give the villagers a glimpse of Singapore. They dressed in ethnic costumes and performed sang local songs such as “Chan Mali Chan” and “Munnaeru Vaalibaa”. Watch the trip highlights in the video below.

The trip was way beyond my expectations. I absolutely did not expect it to be so enriching, fulfilling and amazing but, it was! I went there with the intention to give but received so much more in return. Shirlyn Sng, Programmer

About Overseas Volunteering Expedition

Overseas Volunteering Expedition (OVE), a Special Project under NTU Welfare Services Club, aims to provide individuals (with the passion for volunteering) a platform to benefit less-privileged communities beyond geographical boundaries. Striving to achieve sustainability through projects that would benefit communities in the long run, OVE hopes to promote the spirit of volunteerism by embarking on an overseas volunteering expedition.

OVE also strives to promote volunteerism in Singapore through collaboration with local social service organisations.

Furthermore, OVE aims to nurture future leaders through establishing a close-knitted group of like-minded individuals with the common goal of helping those in need and encourage students to volunteer both locally and internationally. To date, OVE has extended its outreach to several countries such as Cambodia, China, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
