Augmenting urban soundscapes

(AUS)

An evidence-based approach to improve urban soundscapes by adding sounds to urban areas inundated with environmental noise

About AUS

Augmenting urban soundscapes is a project funded under Singapore Ministry of National Development and National Research Foundation’s Land and Liveability National Innovation Challenge (2015 – 2020) and the Cities of Tomorrow R&D Programme (2020 – 2023).

recruiting study participants

Want to contribute to a citizen science initiative? The Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Lab at NTU is looking for participants to take part in a study which aims to generate an open-access database of responses to perceptual attributes of soundscapes (acoustic stimuli) that are presented over headphones.

inter.noise 2021

We are presenting two papers at the 50th International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering (Inter.noise 2021). Inter.noise 2021 is held virtually from 1 to 5 August 2021.

  1. Assessment of inter-IC sound microelectromechanical systems microphones for soundscape reporting
  2. Development of a feedback interface for in-situ soundscape evaluation

Dr. Bhan Lam will be chairing two sessions in soundscapes

  • 15.00 Soundscapes, General, Part 1
  • 15.05 Soundscape Evaluations

Invitation to Submit to Special Issue

Dr. Bhan Lam and Asst. Prof. Hong Jooyoung are co-guest editing a Special Issue “Designing Sustainable Urban Soundscapes”, which aims to gather research results concerning urban soundscape research, education, and design. This is a special issue of Sustainability (ISSN 2071-1050), an open-access journal (SCIE, JIF = 3.251, Citescore = 3.9, JCR Q2 of Environmental Studies).

latest journal publication

Our paper on “A mixed-reality approach to soundscapes assessment of outdoor environments augmented with natural sounds” has been published in Elsevier Building and Environment.

We utilised a Microsoft Hololens to provide an immersive audiovisual experience for soundscape design iteration in situ. A considerable physical and logistical effort was required to conduct the experiments outdoors in hot and humid Singapore in the Nanyang Technological University campus.
