Description

Inspired by the Arizonian landscape, this performative garment seeks to express the formation and capture the Genius Loci of the Grand Canyon, celebrating the sense of grandeur and spirituality unique to the landscape. The transformative garment encapsulates the notion of time, akin to the process of the ancient Colorado River cutting through the rock layers and carving out the great valley. Mirroring this idea, the white outer garment disintegrates as water flows through it, revealing a multi-colored dress piece which reflects the visuals and palette of the canyon; like how the river uncovers the concealed folds of the earth, unveiling the fragments of the past— the collection of the Earth’s history.

The performance art piece seeks to capture the direct physical experience of the flow of time and Colorado River across the Earth (garment +human body), through the water device attached to the dancer’s body. It attempts to use technology to connect us with our physical environment instead of detaching us from it, thus allowing us to experience our environment in a new way.
