Quintessence (2013)
Kong Yi-Jun, Ian, Singapore
Description
Inspired by the jellyfish, Quintessence is a wearable art piece and an exploration of music in relation to the wearer. Music and sounds affect our spatial and interpersonal relations, serving as unseen stimulants that affect our negotiation of spaces and the people within.
What then is the quintessential relation between music and mood? Can this ineffable quality be translated into wearable art and performance?
Taking conventional bustier and pant-forms and making them layered and structured, the outward appearance of the piece can be intimidating, even formidable. Yet, the embedded LED lights, triggered by music/sounds, tell another story: that of vulnerability and putting up a braver, maybe even, false front.
