Guardian Angel Initiative

Thank you, Guardian Angel, for looking out for the wellbeing of a fellow member of the OneNTU community!

The Guardian Angel Initiative (GAI) is purposed to encourage everyone in the NTU community to actively look out for one another and bring support and help to those who need them.

If you are concerned about the mental or emotional wellbeing of students and colleagues, do proactively reach out and encourage him/her to seek help. Here are some tips on how to support your peers and colleagues:

    1. Reach out to friends and peers you feel are showing signs of distress.
    2. Actively listen to their worries and acknowledge the emotions without judging.
    3. Ask open-ended and clarifying questions such as “How did that make you feel?”
    4. Suggest different support pathways for them to get further help such as from the University Counselling Centre.
    5. Check-in often.

Use this GAI form!

If the student or colleague is unwilling to seek help or if you continue to be concerned, you can refer the student/staff to the University Wellbeing Office (UWO) using this GAI form. This is especially if you encounter the following:

    • You notice signs that a student or colleague is struggling with their wellbeing (e.g. out-of-character behaviour, agitation, reclusiveness, etc.), or
    • The student or colleague shared things you feel are disconcerting and should not be ignored (e.g. suicidal thoughts, expression of hopelessness, behaviours indicating intention to harm self or others, etc.).

The information you provide will help UWO keep them on our radar and follow-up with the most appropriate approach to check-in with and support the student or colleague. The information you provide will remain strictly confidential and you will remain anonymous to the person.

Thank you very much!
