-It is not guaranteed that the cloning will go well
-Cause ethical issues
-Might bring about a new disease in the dogs.

2.

Pros
-help lower food prices
-ensure that famine is reduced

Cons
-Might have harmful effects.
-Might encourage misguided policies

Will not accept the aid because even though it might help reduce famine, it might bring about serious problem of diseases.

Styrofoam contains lots of air space, when it is dissolved in acetone, the air bubbles escape and the structure will change, result in denser structure.

2.

a. Branching will cause the structure will be more rigid (brittle) thus it will be less flexible.

b. The layers of molecules can slide between each linear HDPE, therefore making it more flexible.

3.

– The weak but extensive dispersion force allows the molecules to slip pass one another thus allowing it to stretch.

– As for paper, there is different interaction which does not allow sliding between molecules.

4.

a. Non toxic, bio-compatible, non-biodegradable, lack of reactivity in body fluid

b. PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate)
– Light weight
– Transparent
– Non-toxic
– Permeable to oxygen

c. Hard contact lens (PMMA) => rigid, non-gas permeable plastic
Soft (silicone) => flexible, allows oxygen to reach eyes
Due to those properties, soft lenses tend to be more comfortable.

1.

Acetone dissolves the polymer, allowing the gas of the forming agent to escape. The polymer collapses on itself & is more dense because the gas has been removed.

2.

a)LDPE cannot be used as it does not have the required strength.

b)The molecules of HDPE must line up in a way that produces the required strength. Using a thin liner of HDPE allows sufficient flexibility.

3.

When we stretch a piece of plastic bag, the length of the piece of plastic bag being pulled increases dramatically and the thickness decreases as the plastic has weak but extensive dispersion forces. This force allow the molecules to slip pass one and another allowing the plastic to stretch and neck. On the other hand, when the same pulling force is applied to paper, it tears rather than stretch. This is because the cellulose molecules in paper are held far more rigidly in place and are not free to become aligned.

4.

a. 1. Stable over time of intended use
2. Non-toxic
3. Lack of solubility in body fluids
4. Lack reactivity with body fluids

b. Contact lenses are made from polymethyl methaacrylate (PMMA), silicone-acrylate materials such as Kolfocon. It also consists of fluoro-silicone-acrylate polymers, fluoro-silicones, polymacon and methacrylates which include hioxifilcon, methafilcon or lidofilcon. Their desired properties are non toxic, permeable to oxygen, comfortable to wear and inexpensive.

c. Hard contact lenses are made from PMMA, a rigid non-gas permeable plastic while soft contact lenses are made from silicon which is flexible and allows oxygen to reach the eyes. Hence, soft lenses are more comfortable.

one carbon atom differs from another in the number of neutrons and in the number of electrons. carbon atoms differ from all uranium atoms in terms of the number of protons, neutrons and electrons and also in their chemical properties.

2.

1.

Desalination is not widely used because the process requires a lot of energy, making it expensive to produce drinking water.

2.

The water-soluble vitamins would be expected to be polar because “like dissolves like”. As water is a polar molecule, a water-soluble molecule would be expected to be polar, too. Fat-soluble vitamins would not be polar.

3.

a. Air drying the laundry will avoid us using dryers. This will reduce the electricity consumption, which will allow us to burn less coal as a result and reduce the SO2 emission.

b. Walk, bike or take public transport will reduce the number of cars on the road. This will reduce the use of petrol, which will reduce the emission of nitrate oxides.

c. Reduce the number of times of using the appliances will reduce the use of electricity. This will allow us to burn less coal, which will reduce the amount of SO2 emission.

d. More heat can be stored and conserved in the water heater. This will avoid using electricity again to reheat the water.

e. Buying food that are locally grown can save the environment by reducing the pollution caused in the process of transportation; plane, ship, lorry will consume diesel and emit CO2 and NO2.

4.

a. Coal fire plants release colossal amounts of water vapor along with the combustion process. The hydrogen and the carbon in the coal make at least twice the amount of water as the coal burnt when vapor is cooled it becomes visible as fog and becomes “smoky”.

b. The natural pH of rain is 5.4 (from lecture slides). Since the rain in the park is 10 times more acidic than natural, its pH is 1 less. Hence, it has a pH of 4.4.

1.

a: Exothermic. Heat is released during combustion
b: Endothermic. Heat from the body allows water from the skin to change from liquid to gas and evaporate
c. Endothermic. Heat is absorbed from surrounding to melt the ice from solid to liquid

2.

The bond energy of the products are larger than those of the reactants . This will lead to a large negative net energy indicating on an exothermic reaction. Hence, products should have a higher bond strength than reactants.

3.

Heat is energy that that is transferred from one body to another as a result of a difference in temperature. In this case, when you touch a cup of coffee, what you feel is heat. On the other hand, temperature is a measure of hotness/ coldness expressed in terms of any scales like Celsius / Fahrenheit. Hence, if you use a thermometer to measure the hotness of the coffee, that is temperature.

4.

a. 98% isooctane and 2% n-heptane
It has a higher octane rating than other blends sold at gasoline stations and hence is more resistant to knocking than these blends.

b. The octane rating provides no information about whether or not the fuel contains oxygenates. other labels around the pump should reveal this information.
