What is a Rhino?

A Rhino is also known as a Rhinoceros. They are large, herbivorous mammals with horned snouts (Charismatic Mega Fauna). The word “rhinoceros” originated from the Greek words “rhino” which means nose and “ceros” which means horn (Bradford, 2016).

Rhino horns were believed by many to have healing properties in folk medicine (eg. traditional Chinese medicine), and certain Rhino species were thus hunted nearly to extinction (Bradford, 2016).

Rhino horns that are grinded into powder was believed and used as a powerful aphrodisiac / hangover cure / treatment for fever / rheumatism / gout and cure of many other disorders, according to the International Rhino Foundation (Bradford, 2016).

Their horns were sometimes also used as trophies or decorations (Bradford, 2016).

Some would even consider such acts as cruel and a violation of harmony with the natural world which could topple the balance between various natural cycles.

 

As one’s imagination might conjure, there are many different types of species of Rhinos in the world, and this brings us to the focus of this blog which is on a specific species of Rhinos that are about to extinct! They are called Javan Rhinos!
