Introduction

Why does Singapore have to manage the waste produced?

Singapore lies at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and have an extremely limited space of 714.3 km2, with one main island and 63 offshore islands. (Singapore Department of Statistics, 2012).

Singapore does not have much land that can be used as landfill for waste. Yet, the amount of waste is ever-growing.

According to statistics provided by the National Environment Agency (NEA) of Singapore,
in 2008, the total waste generated was 5,970,185 tonnes and in 2011, the total waste generated had increased 15% to 6,898,300 tonnes.
Therefore, it is crucial that waste management is taken seriously in Singapore, as there are very limited lands to be used as landfills.

Waste management in Singapore can be divided into 3 main categories, namely Government, Organisational and Individual Initiatives. This blog shall seek to provide a comprehensive overview of waste management in this 3 categories.
