Timeless Garden

Designer / Castiglione Morelli Design

The Timeless Garden is a clock that does away with the need for batteries as a source of power. Instead, it is powered through a small “pot” on top, where plants can be planted. The process of plant growth generates ions in the soil, which acts an as electrolyte. The metal anodes and cathodes in the soil then pick up these ions to generate a current that helps to power the clock. The clock is also made up of recycled components that are easily seperable so that they can be reused and recycled again.

This clock design captures interest, as its functionality (how it is powered) is radically different from what most of us would have thought. The usage of this clock also provides a more accessible means to domestic nature by the plant that grows in the “pot” of the clock. This clock provides an additional affordance for one to have a plant in the house, which is shown to have various benefits for one’s psychological health, such as reduced stress.
