Fecal Sludge is collected from on-site sanitation systems such as:
- latrines,
- non-sewered public toilets,
- septic tanks,
- aqua privies (a small tank that is placed under a squatting hole toilet)
Fecal sludge as its name suggests, comprises of varying consistencies of solid fecal matter, as well as other non-fecal matter such as moisture-laden toilet paper. Fecal sludge is sometimes referred to as septage.
