“If you’re going to do something like this, you have to be as good as the book in a lot of respects. But we also have to look for things that ordinary books can’t do.”

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos once said, “This isn’t a device, it’s a service” to sum up the appeal of the Amazon Kindle prior to its launch in 2007. In an interview with Newsweek, Bezos explained the work ethic behind the innovation of the e-readers that was a watershed in the improvement of e-readers at that time. With the Sony Reader as the only available digitized book in 2004, the Amazon Kindle sought to transcend all boundaries and place forth a product that would shape the future of the literary world. In 2011, Amazon reported that its eBook sales surpassed that of their print books sales.

As aptly put in Nick Moran’s article, “The trend toward digitization is undeniable, and there are many reasons to be optimistic: big publishers are making more money off of more products than ever before; it’s easier than ever to publish a book; and the number of books available to anyone with an internet connection is unprecedented.”
