Prevalence

In Singapore, according to the 2010 Department of Statistics, there is no official information on the proportion of the population who have adopted a vegetarian diet. However, with 33% of the population identifying as Buddhist, and 5% Hindu (Census of Population 2010), we may infer that a significant amount of Singaporeans are vegetarian due to religious belief alone.

In the USA, vegetarianism is quite prevalent, with 10% of the population who consider themselves vegetarians. Animal welfare (54%), improvement of overall health (53%) and environmental concerns (47%) are the top reasons for adopting a vegetarian diet (Statistic Brain, 2013). Demographic data on vegetarians demonstrates a female majority, with 59% of all vegetarians being women, and a younger population, where 42% are aged 18-34 (Statistic Brain, 2013).
