Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) is the only sun bear conservation centre in the world. Founded in Sabah, Malaysia in 2008 as a two-stage effort to provide the care, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned and captive sun bears. The BSBCC also addresses the lack of knowledge and awareness about the little-known Sun bear internationally.

In achieving the aims of sun bear conservation, BSBCC works through 3 main pillars which are:

  1. Rehabilitation – Rescuing of sun bears and providing a suitable behaviour for the bears in the Centre’s 2 bear houses until they are ready to be released into the wild. Includes health checks, interaction with other bears, and training pens (to train them to learn how to avoid electric fences which will be surrounding the environment they will be released into)
  2. Education – BSBCC aims to provide public education and awareness programs. There will be a visitor centre available for people to know more about the sun bears and can see the bears in their natural habitat. BSBCC feels that education is the future and that spreading the word about conservation of the Bornean forest will help preserve the species living in the forest.
  3. Research – The Centre promotes and supports further research on the Sun bears as there are currently not enough information on the Sun bears.

Currently, the BSBCC houses 33 rescued sun bears. Visit their website to take a look at the bears (all of them are named!) and learn more about the the BSBCC at http://www.bsbcc.org.my
