Description of Workshop’s Sessions:
Trans-Asia Publishing
Session 1: Trans-Asia Publishing
In the first session, participants will focus on the different Chinese publishing markets across Asia (including the similarities and differences; advantages and disadvantages etc. of the different markets). Participants will also discuss and brainstorm the following:
- Is there a possibility (or is there a need) to create a community for the Asian Chinese publishing industry?
- What are the opportunities and challenges of the Asian Chinese publishing industry in the current age?
- What are the implications of the rise of digital media?
Trans-local Writing
Session 2: Trans-local Publishing
In the second session, participants will explore how the rapid transfer/movement of information, writers and etc in the digital age has changed and created new trends in the publishing industry. Through studying the case studies of several Chinese writers, participants will also explore the tensions that writers face as a result of local, global and transborder issues.
Trans-boundary Reading
Session 3: Trans-boundary Publishing
The Asian Chinese publishing industry is a part of the global cultural community. It also mutually interacts and influences the worldwide publishing markets. Hence, in this session, participants will discuss the effects and role of global trends on the Asian Chinese publishing industry. The discussion will also explore topics on translation, recreation and the importance of Chinese literary works from areas outside Asia.
Trans-media Storytelling
Session 4: Trans-media Publishing
With the advancement of technology and Internet, the publishing industry is no longer just about the production of physical books. How should the publishing industry progress in view of the rise of e-books, audiobooks and virtual reality? In this session, participants will discuss whether the publishing industry should work on a cross-domain alliance or expand its offerings and transform itself. Participants will also discuss the implications of this trend for the roles of editors and creators.
