Having Mary as our facilitator and guide motivated a level of specificity in our critiques, since she modelled a certain sharpness together with kindness in sharing her observations of our poems. Through the workshop I regained an appreciation for editing which she emphasised was a big part of what poets do beyond writing, and began to see new possibilities in my work and others. I also grew to be more observant of my moments of lazyness and insincerity, such as when I leave something unclear that I am myself unclear of, as if to merely fill up space or confound without purpose.
