Sharlene’s course was wonderful for a group of diverse writers at various stages of their writing. I found it very easy to talk about the challenges of writing and respond to the prompts during interactive segments because the general atmosphere was welcoming and supportive (even with or maybe because of Zoom!). Due to changes in the course schedule, I was unable to attend one of the sessions but there was a Zoom recording made available and I appreciated the ability to follow along asynchronously. There was a lot of material covered about the effort it takes to write, how to come to one’s style, and how writing is about delving into phenomenon that you find fascinating. Sharlene’s inviting presence and the gathering of the participants made this a really reassuring space for me during those few weeks. I’ve given up writing the novel for the moment but I’m still writing creative short-form pieces with the tools and exercises I’ve learned.
