Overview

Originally from Singapore, Yu-Mei has been based in Boston since 2018. Since completing an MFA in creative writing at Boston University, she has been working on her first novel, teaching fiction writing at GrubStreet and working at an independent bookstore.

In this session she will share her experiences as a Singaporean writer negotiating the American publishing industry, including submitting to US literary journals, participating in writing conferences, and creating a more inclusive and constructive workshop experience for her students.

Learning Outcomes

After completion of this session, participants will:

  1. develop their knowledge & understanding of the publishing industry & creative writing teaching approaches in the US
  2. have the opportunity to ask questions & share their own knowledge, experience and insights on the US publishing industry and creative writing education
  3. come away with an understanding of what it takes to develop a writing career in the US piblishing industry.

Who should register?

The session is open to the public so anyone can attend although fiction writers interested in publishing in the US will benefit the most from the session.

The key target audience are fiction writers including:

 

  1. Foundation Writers — Early stage, promising writers with no requirement for any publication history. Foundation writers are those who are writing for the first time or have never written with deadlines or structure before.
  2. Intermediate Writers — Writers who have chosen to pursue writing as a full time or part time career with a serious, professional intent but who are not yet published with a mainstream or recognised independent publisher.
  3. Advanced Writers — Writers who have published at least one book with a mainstream or recognised independent publisher, and/or published in at least one literary journal and/or anthology.

    About Yu-Mei Balasingamchow

    Yu-Mei Balasingamchow (she/her) is the co-author of Singapore: A Biography, editor of How We Live Now: Stories of Daily Living, and co-editor of In Transit: An Anthology from Singapore on Airports and Air Travel. Her short fiction has received a Pushcart Prize Special Mention, won the Mississippi Review Fiction Prize and been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize. In 2022, she received a grant from the Elizabeth George Foundation to support the writing of her debut novel.

    Yu-Mei is originally from Singapore and now lives in Boston. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Boston University and has received grants and fellowships in the U.S. from the Sewanee Writers Conference, Ragdale Foundation, Vermont Studio Center and GrubStreet, and in Singapore from the National Arts Council. She has been an honorary fellow in writing at the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and writer-in-residence at Nanyang Technological University.
