Overview
Workshop 1: Planning for the writing career you want (2 hours)
Participants will learn about the different options for publishing their work, set goals and develop a strategy to achieve the writing career they want.
Workshop 2: Developing a sustainable writing practice (1 hour)
Participants will explore how to integrate writing as a consistent and sustainable practice in their lives.
Workshop 3: Starting your novel – generating ideas and outlining (3 hours)
Participants will undertake exercises to generate story ideas and will learn techniques for outlining a novel.
Workshop 4: Finding a literary agent (1 hour)
Participants will learn about the role of literary agents in the publishing process and discuss tips on querying agents.
Workshop 5: Plotting and revision – common issues and how to fix them (3 hours)
Participants will learn about common plot and structure issues affecting novel manuscripts and how to avoid and fix them.
Learning Outcomes
- gain a better understanding of the publishing industry, how to query literary agents and how to position their work in the market
- learn how to generate ideas for stories, outline novels and revise them
- articulate their writing goals and develop a plan to achieve these
Who should register?
- Intermediate Writers — Writers who have chosen to pursue writing as a full time or part time career with a serious, professional intent but who are not yet published with a mainstream or recognised independent publisher
- Advanced Writers — Writers who have published at least one book with a mainstream or recognised independent publisher, and/or published in at least one literary journal and/or anthology
This course will be conducted in the English language.
Participants will be selected by the Visiting Writer with assistance from the Asia Creative Writing Programme. A waiting list will be maintained.
Registration and Pricing

- A 500 word writing sample
- A short summary of your current writing project of ~100 words
- A short biography of ~50 to 100 words

Course Fees
- For 5 workshops, total of 10 hours:
- $80 for adults
- $30 for students, unemployed, low income migrant workers
- Free for undergraduates and post graduates from Singapore tertiary institutions
- Non-refundable if cancellation 2 weeks or less before course starts

About Zen Cho
Zen Cho writes fantasy and romance. Her newest novel, The Friend Zone Experiment, is a contemporary romance set among London’s East and Southeast Asian community. Zen is a winner of the Hugo, Crawford and British Fantasy Awards and the LA Times Ray Bradbury Prize, as well as a finalist for the World Fantasy, Ignyte, Lambda, Locus and Astounding Awards. She was born and raised in Malaysia, resides in the UK, and lives in a notional space between the two.
