In late 2021 we are very excited to have as Visiting Writers the following five award winning writers and translators who are masters of their craft and will be giving craft based workshops and courses online in 2021.
  • In their four week online workshop series, Faber poet and Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing Mary Jean Chan offers an Advanced Poetry Course with peer and facilitator critique of participants’ poems.
  • Deborah Smith, the Man Booker prize winner and translator of The Vegetarian will give four seminars covering the craft of literary translation, contemporary issues in translation, and cultural production and reception more broadly, informing how we talk about our texts, languages, authors, and work. These seminars are of interest to writers, academics, cultural commentators and not just literary translators.
  • Akhil Sharma, the Folio Prize and International Dublin Literary Award Winner will give a six week course on what exactly is worth writing about: the interior life or the social world and in what proportions. He will explore advanced techniques and approaches to writing compelling short stories.
  • Singapore’s own Deborah Rogers Prize winner, Sharlene Teo, will lead participants through a four week workshop on the fundamentals of writing a novel from the development of ideas, plotting and planning a novel.
  • Malaysian Chinese writer, Khor Ewe Pin will give a course for emerging & developing Chinese language writers on the skills, techniques & approaches to writing a young adult novel. This workshop will be conducted in Mandarin Chinese.

The great thing is that for undergraduate and post graduate students at Singapore tertiary institutions – including NTU and the NIE – the courses are free.
