Despite being new to the genre, I enjoyed the class thoroughly and developed a better appreciation for the art involved in writing this particular form of fiction. What made this possible was Aliette’s thoughtful organisation of the class, the pacing of the activities, her observation skills and the deconstruction of this genre into its basic building blocks and how the character, plot and world interact with one another. I gained new knowledge about fiction and planning a story through the class and through the discussions with my generous groupmates.
