Liu Ka-shiang’s literary career began with poetry. In the early 1980s, he sparked the “Liu Ka-shiang craze” with his critical view of the politics that reflected Taiwan’s social reality. At the same time, he also wrote proses about avian ecology and became a pioneer of Taiwanese nature writing. Over several decades, Liu tirelessly trekked all over Taiwan, continually experimenting with various kinds of nature genres and subjects, ranging from geography and cultural history to insects, flowers and grass, all meticulously expressed in a variety of forms, including poetry, prose, novels, guides and picture books. For Liu, creative writing is not only his interests, but also a mission of consciousness awakening. His innovative works always attract attention or spark a fashion for writing.
