Lab Members
Principal Investigator
Associate Professor Bobby K. Cheon, Ph.D.
I received my PhD in Psychology from Northwestern University, where I specialized in social/cultural psychology and cultural neuroscience. I completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Division of Leadership, Management & Organization at the Business School of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) before joining the School of Social Sciences (Psychology) of NTU as an Assistant Professor.
My research investigates how people conceptualize and navigate relations with fellow group members (in-groups) and people belonging to other groups (out-groups), especially in response contextual threats. Towards this objective, I investigate how perceived threats from the environment influence and interact with neurobiological mechanisms to shape intragroup processes (e.g., empathy, cooperation, affiliation), intergroup processes (e.g., prejudice, in-group favouritism, discrimination), as well as cultural diversity in these group processes.
I am also a Principal Investigator at the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences (SICS) at A*STAR, where I apply my research experience on culture, social influences, and group processes to examine psychosocial modulation of eating behaviors, appetite, and nutritional health.
Research Fellow
Aimee Pink, Ph.D.
Dr Aimee Pink (PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons)) is an early career researcher with an interest in examining personality traits and eating behaviours. She completed her Psychology undergraduate degree at the University of Southampton before moving to Swansea to complete an MSc in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology followed by a PhD. Her thesis investigated the mechanisms underpinning emotional eating with a particular focus on the role of emotion regulation. She is currently exploring the concept of feeling fat and the role it plays in emotional eating as well as its impacts on body image.
Other research interests include examining the relationships between personality traits and hoarding behaviours in individuals following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and previously she has also conducted a scoping review into the use of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation following TBI and evaluating the psychometric properties of outcome measures as part of her work with the Independent Neurorehabilitation Providers Alliance. She has a keen interest in ensuring research is accessible to the public and undertaking outreach work in with children.
Ph.D. Students
Dashalini Katna
Shalini is currently a final-year Ph.D. candidate. Her research interests are focused on intra-and intergroup causes, dynamics, and consequences that motivate and mobilize individuals to actuate self-sacrificial actions which harm outgroups in conflict scenarios.
Pamela Goh
Pamela is a year 2, School of Social Sciences’ PhD (Psychology) student under the supervision of Prof Bobby Cheon. Her primary research area mainly centres around the topic of crowd psychology, with an avid interest on how people respond to emergency or crisis situations such as a terror attack. It is of hope that one day she can run virtual reality simulations or simulate a real “emergency” to study and understand whether people in Singapore are truly crisis-ready!
Project/Research Officer
Lee Li Ling
Final Year Project (FYP) Students
Wayne Koh
Wayne is a Year 4 Psychology Undergraduate student in NTU currently doing his Final Year Project under the supervision of Assistant Professor Bobby Cheon. His current research is on exploring how different cultural ideologies (i.e., the way we think about cultures) affect individuals’ reactions to cultural mixing (i.e., a foreign culture entering one’s heritage culture). Other research interests include behavioural insights, intergroup dynamics, youth issues, and applied psychology.
Hoo Yu Qian
Yu Qian is a Year 4 Psychology student who is currently doing her final year project under the supervision of Prof Bobby. Her current project is investigating the effects of subjective socioeconomic status on eating behaviour, with food insecurity being the mediator. Being a foodie herself, she hopes to better understand individual’s motivations behind eating. Hence her rationale for doing a project in this area.
Kayla Hoon En Qi
Kayla is a Year 4 psychology undergraduate and currently doing my Final Year Project under the supervision of Prof Bobby. Her interest primarily lies in the exploration of intergroup processes. Her present research study looks into the effects of social identity complexity on alleviating aggressive behaviour towards outgroups in a competitive setting. This is with the intention to bring about a more harmonious and peaceful coexistence.
Kwan Benetta
Benetta is a final year psychology student and has two areas of interests; working with special needs children and the psychology of eating. She previously completed an internship at MOE Psychology Branch and contributed to their research to improve the utility of hearing and visual devices for special needs children. Benetta is currently pursuing an undergraduate project, investigating the relationship between social media usage and satiety goals.
Koh We Chin
We Chin is currently a year 4 Psychology student in NTU. He is interested in finding out why social deviants or minorities undergo discrimination and stigmatization. His current project is on how situational factors, specifically tightness-looseness (the strength of norm), affect stigmatization of transgender women.
Undergraduate Research Experience On Campus (URECA) Students
Shermine Lau Shimin
Shermine is a Year 2 Psychology Undergraduate in NTU, School of Social Sciences. Under the URECA programme, she is working on a project titled “Investigating psychosocial influence on free-living dietary patterns”, supervised by Prof. Bobby. She has always been interested in research in general, and intrigued by topics related to behavioural and cognitive psychology, health and eating behaviour.
Rebecca Low Wan Ying
Rebecca is a year 2 Psychology student joining the AIR (Appetite & Intergroup Relations) lab under the URECA program. She is interested in both eating behaviours and behavioural economics (nudging). Her main research activities include working with the other URECA students to translate participants’ food journals into their nutritional information (e.g. calorie intake, macros like protein, fat and carbohydrates). They intend to assess participants’ eating behaviours in relation to gratitude and investigate other psychosocial influences on free-living dietary patterns.
Tan Lay Hui
Lay Hui is interested in health psychology and positive psychology. Currently, she is involved in the URECA project which investigates psychosocial influences on free-living dietary patterns.
Lim Jin Jin
Jin Jin is a Year 2 psychology undergraduate. Although she is not a foodie, she would still love to have some good food! She is currently helping out on a research investigating psychological influences on one’s dietary patterns and habits.
