Global Warming is the phenomenon of gradually increasing average temperatures of Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, that threatens to bring Earth’s climates to extreme levels.

Causes

  • Human activities
    • Deforestation
    • Burning of fossil fuels (to generate energy)
  • Natural processes
    • Respiration
    • Volcanic eruptions
    • Solar radiation

These activities and processes result in the production of huge amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), a heat-trapping greenhouse gas that increases global surface temperatures. Extreme cold temperatures have also been seen in some states, an explained occurrence that scientists link to global warming as well.

Consequences

  • Melting ice caps and glaciers lead to rising sea levels and subsequently floods
  • Animal habitats destroyed (e.g. Great Barrier Reef in Australia) and subsequent migration of animals lead to overcrowding
  • Fluctuating weather patterns lead to natural disasters like tornadoes and snowstorms
  • Droughts lead to decreased agricultural output and subsequently increased global hunger levels
  • Displacement of populations living near coastlines
  • The large amount of CO2 absorb by ocean leads to ocean acidification
