b. Refer to hardcopy for the drawing.

c. They should have different sweetness. They have different structures and functional groups, hence, they will react differently with the receptor of the tongue and lead to different level of sweetness.

2.

Everything is related to chemical. All nutrients in food are chemical compounds. In other words, there is nothing in this world that can be “chemical-free”.

a) C6(H2O)6

c) No. As they have different structures, it leads to different physical properties and therefore different tastes.

2.

Everything is made out of chemicals, even all organic food consists entirely of chemicals. It is impossible to go on an “all organic chemical-free” diet because food itself is made up of chemicals. The highly advertised organic diet might not always be better because of the misconceptions that inorganic chemicals is bad and natural organic chemicals is better, this is not always true. It is also very hard to go on an organic diet because the method and the process by which the food is grown must be very strictly adhere to organic certifications, which means it will be highly costly.

a) Cn(H20)n
c) Different isomers have different chemical properties, hence different sweetness among the isomers.

2.

It is impossible to go on an all organic and chemical-free diet because water is an example of a chemical, and it is not possible that food is water-free. It is a marketing gimmick to convince people to buy their products. The chemicals present in the food depend on the type of the chemical and the source of it. Therefore, no food produced can be all organic and chemical-free.

a. C6(H2O)6= C6H12O6
c. glucose, an isomer of fructose, is less sweet than the latter. Isomers have different chemical properties

2.

chemical refers to chemical compounds, and all types of foods have chemical compounds

Organic food is defined as lacking synthetic pesticides (chemical) used on crops. It is impossible to go on an organic/chemical free diet because an item can be labelled organic when only 95% of its ingredients are organically grown. Hence, some chemicals would no doubt slip through. Some ingredients are very difficult to be sourced organically, thus they are exempted from the requirements, and again, these ingredients may contain certain chemicals that people would wish to avoid. Organic pesticieds are used in place of synthetic pesticides when growing organic food. However, there are no real differences between organic and synthetic pesticides. Organic pesticides come from natural sources, but because they were never processed, they can contain the exact same substances as regular/ synthetic pesticides. So it is nigh impossible to avoid chemicals/”perceived harmful substances”

c) No. Glucose and Galactose are isomers of fructose but all have different sweetness levels as they have different properties.

2.

1. Even water is a chemical substance which means it is definitely impossible to have a chemical free diet, and also not all chemicals are bad for the body.

a. (CH2O)6

b. Refer to hard copy.

c. No. They have different sweetness as different structural isomers have different physical properties.

2.

Chemical-free food is impossible to obtain as the soil and crops have naturally occurring chemicals which might be equally dangerous as industrial chemicals like pesticides. Hence, pesticide-free crops might also have harmful chemicals.

Transportation of organic food from farmlands to highly urbanised cities might have an extremely high carbon footprint, which will greatly damage the environment.

b) Refer to hard copy of exercise sheet

c) No. Different isomers have different physical and chemical properties, hence they should have different sweetness.

2.

Everything in existence is a chemical. It is impossible to have a chemical-free diet because even the local and organic diet are doubled with BPA and high toxic phthalate DEHP. It is only possible to reduce using plastic in cooking storage and preparation, and focus on fresh and low fat food to minimise exposure to BPA and phthalates.

(c) No. Isomers have different chemical properties hence giving different sweetness.

2.

a. C6(H2O)6
b. Fructose and Glucose are isomers
c. They have different sweetness. Since different structures would trigger different receptors on our tongue, such that the structure that is able to trigger more sweetness receptors and for a longer period of time, it would be sweeter (or have a stronger taste)

2.

“All Organic” is not possible because:
– Food supply may have been exposed to chemicals despite avoiding plastics, canned food and eating food from a company that caters organic food and drinks
– Studies have also reported that there have been unknown sources of chemical exposure in food such as spices and diary products.
“Chemical-free” diet is impossible because:
– Water and air are all chemical compounds. Food itself is a chemical compound.
– It is impossible to live free of chemicals.
– It can be pesticide free, fertilizers free but cannot be chemical free.

c. Isomers differ in their physical property. Since taste is a physical property. The sweetness differs.

2.

All organic molecules consists of atoms. For instances, glucose.
Glucose is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms held together with covalent bonds. Therefore, organic compounds are made of chemical compounds.
