Although the number of dogs will increase, the gene pool will remain the same. Thus, that particular breed of dogs are not able to evolve to the changing world environment, to be better. Moreover, research has shown that the clone is unable to survive as long the donor.

2.

Pros:
People would not die from the famine.
Genetically modified corn can be added with more nutritional benefits, such that the needs of humans are satisfied with only corn.

Cons:
Allergies might occur and new diseases might occur, as GM corn might be incompatible
to some, as the GM gene is not compatible to the host (humans)
After consumption of GM corn, the waste might inter breed together with other crops, for example weeds, producing super weeds, which is not ideal.

a. C6(H2O)6
c. Isomers have different structures and hence chemical properties, it is not possible to have the same sweetness.

2.

We use the example of vegetables.

At farms where they grow vegetables, fertilizers used, water and other equipment used for harvesting vegetables are more than often NOT chemical free.

When transporting vegetables from the farms to storage, vegetables are often stored at low temperature and the air is treated with chemicals to maintain the freshness of the vegetables.

Unless you are to plant the vegetables in your garden and consume it immediately, it is more likely to be more organic and exposed to fewer chemicals. But, it is unlikely for it to be completely chemical-free, the environment on a whole is not chemical free.

After dissolving the Styrofoam packing peanuts into acetone, the styrofoam will gather together, condenses and lose their air pockets. Thus, it will become denser.

2.

(a) HDPE is more resistant to chemical impact and stress while LDPE being branched will have limited resistance.

(b) Good balance between flexibility and rigidness.

3.

Interactions in plastic are weaker, they are arranged in a way that they can slide across each other in their layers. Stretching it.

Interactions in the paper are different, they do not have similar properties, hence, they will just break and no stretch.

4.

a. (1) Chemical resistance – Bio-compatible
(2) Flexibility – depending on the use of the material, chemical properties should be different (e.g. bone vs heart valve)
(3) Pore size that only allows water vapour to escape but does not allow for water vapour to enter
(4) Will not degrade or release harmful substances at body temperature – Non-toxic

b. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Properties that are desirable includes soft, transparency and lightweight.

c. Hard – Polymethyl metha crylate PMMA
Soft – Silicone based – PHEMA – poly hydroxyethyl metha crylate
Soft lenses contain more water than the hard lenses.
Soft lenses tear more easily than hard lenses.

Carbon atoms can differ in their number of neutrons: C-12 and C-14 are naturally occuring isotopes. Proton, neutron and electron number

2.

14N and 15N are isotopes of nitrogen. This would give details about their slightly different physical and chemical properties. 14N: 7 protons, 7 neutrons, 7 electrons. 15N: 7 protons, 8 neutrons, 7 electrons.

Symbol N just tells us that it is an element nitrogen with no physical properties or alternative forms stated.

3.

a) 94 protons
b) 93 protons – ne[timoi,
94 protons – platonium
c) 86 protons

Desalination completely removes all the salt from the water.
For water to be suitable for drinking, it requires minute amounts of essential salts.
These techniques are also expensive as it requires more energy which will result in the water being more expensive.

2.

Vitamins that are water soluble are polar. However, fat-soluble is mostly non-polar.
This is because water molecules are polar while fats are non-polar.

Polar molecules dissolve in polar solvents, while non-polar molecules dissolve in non-polar solvents.

3.

(a), (c) and (d) These household products are one of the biggest energy consumers of all. Thus, when more energy is used, indirectly more fuel is burnt to generate electricity. Hence, more sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides are produced to react with water, in turn resulting in acid rain.

(b) Reduce emission of nitrogen and sulfur oxides directly into the air. Traffic congestion results in more emission of such gases since the engine is running for a longer time on the road.

(e) Transportation of imported food results in more nitrogen and sulfur oxides released into the air. In addition, most locally grown food use less chemicals than mass produced foods, in turn less chemicals react with water to produce rain.

4.

(a) Burning coal results in pollutants being released into the air. Since at Ohio Valley, the circulation of air is poor, air movement is stagnant and thus, smoke pollutants will remain in the air and not move around the air, resulting in poor visibility.

(b) The estimated pH will be around 4-5, since natural will fall in the range of 5 to 6.

(a) Exothermic: Heat is released. You can feel the heat.
(b) Endothermic. Liquid to gas. Energy is released to break the weak interactions like hydrogen bonding.
(c) Endothermic. Solid to liquid. Energy is released to break the weak interactions like hydrogen bonding.

2.

The energy level of reactants is higher than the products formed, hence the reaction is exothermic. Exothermic reactions happen when heat is released.

Bond-forming is an endothermic reaction. While. bond breaking for bond breaking is exothermic. Since the latter is smaller than the former, there is a good explosion.

In addition, the rapid increase in the volume of gas the caused the good explosion.

3.

Temperature is a measurement of heat. Temperature determines the direction of heat flow, while heat is energy that flows from a hotter to a colder object.

For example, boiling hot water is 100 degrees Celcius.

One glass of water and a bathtub full water has the same temperature, but the glass of water has lesser heat than the bathtub.

4.

(a) Octane rating of 98 is considerably high. This means that it would less likely explode before the ignition sparks. Hence, this is for better for the engine, as it resists knocking.

(b) Cannot be determined.
The number indicates a ratio. The higher the number, the better behaved the ignition.
Does not indicate the oxygenate level.
