Material Experimentation
Main material: Plastic sheets derived from fusing plastic bags
Reasons and Considerations
- Weight
- Texture
- Stiffness
- Inflatability
- Ability to store air
- Ease of getting it
- Ability to achieve interesting aesthetics
- May look more organic than it is – to project the idea that although plastics are not usually associated with organicity, it can be manipulated to look organic and relatable to the human body).
- For the project’s aesthetic purposes, new plastics are used (I realised aesthetics are not a viable excuse, I could have sourced fully recycled ones but I will elaborate about reducing our consumption of plastics and plans to reuse this artwork later.)
Experimentation outcomes from fusing different types of plastics in many ways:
1st from left, top row: Organza fused with zip lock plastic (falls apart easily)
2nd from left: 2 layers of fused semi-transparent plastic – outcome -> rigid
3rd from left: organza fused on its own
4th from left: semi-transparent plastic fused with organza (falls apart easily)
1st from left, second row: Pleated plastic
