Day 5 (8 Jan) Reflection
8/1/16
I can hardly believe I’m saying this, but amazing race was kind of amazing. I have never been an amazing race person, because it tends to be long, with most members in a team worn out at the end of the day. But this one was different. The race lasted only two hours long, and the team was small enough that we didn’t have to shout to be heard. The nutritionists (my roommate Meredith, who was sick, was there in spirit), were so bonded as a team where just a few days ago we knew each other only in passing. I like how we intuitively listened to, complemented and supported one another when we discussed our strategy, and when we navigated through the unfamiliar streets of Chiang Mai. We were the second group to return to the hotel, thus earning extra points, and the only group to have gone to all the required locations. We were motivated to finish the race well, but at the same time wore our ambition lightly and preferred to enjoy the journey in one other’s company. The race allowed me know my friends better and gave us the space to reflect upon it too. Joyce was our go-getter, dog-lover girl. Bryan was our thoughtful navigator. Xin Yu motivated everyone with an infectious energy. Yong Jia was the dependable protector leading us safely through the busy streets. Our personalities and gifts are diverse, but we made it work.
Back in the room where we started, Professor Astrid, who accompanied my group, commented on what she saw in each of us. About me, she said, “You’re the heart of the team. There’s something about you that makes everyone want to protect you. And you support everyone in their role.” I believe this testifies to how loving my teammates have been. I would be a liability to most competitions that require physical strength. But they, they were sensitive to my weaknesses and respond by being all the more caring. They made me want to contribute as much as I could, in the race and out.
