University Scholars Programme

Day 4 (7th Jan)

We went to Chiang Mai University for the school visit and a lecture there. We were also privileged to have the chance to meet the dean of the Political Science division and she speaks such fluent English, which was something that was unexpected for me. Maybe it is due to the preconceived notion of Thai’s way of speaking English (I apologize if it sounds discriminatory). After that we were conducting surveys and having Fixed Group Discussions with the Chiang Mai University students. The students there were super helpful and they would spare no second thought in helping us to do our surveys. I was taken aback by their willingness to help us do the survey as I was expecting a lot of rejections from them, especially when we do not speak the local language as it will be hard to communicate with them. But their level of English was better than what I expected and we only had slight problems in communicating with them. This led me to think if Singaporean students will be as approachable and helpful as them. Also, when we faced some problems in trying to show the people how to complete the survey, the students who did the surveys before would help us to explain to their friends. I felt super grateful for their help as they have no obligation to help us. After that, we went to the Chiang Mai University Lake and the place is super scenic! How I wish Singapore has some scenic places all around the city instead of having to go to Bukit Timah Hill or Little Guilin.
