The Straits Times is opening nominations for the third edition of The Straits Times Singaporean of the Year 2017, which seeks to honour an individual or group of people whose extraordinary acts of goodwill have improved their community and the lives of others. The annual award, supported by bank UBS Singapore, will be given out in early 2018.

Mr Peter Lim Kok Seng – a ST Singaporean of the Year 2016 candidate – donated a part of his liver to someone, and when interviewed why he did so, he said just to save a life, that was my heart’s desire”.

Joseph Schooling and his parents, May and Colin, won the award in 2016 after he took home Singapore’s first Olympic gold medal in the 100m butterfly last year. In 2015, Noriza A. Mansor won hearts when she helped an elderly man who soiled himself in public. Watch the videos below:

Since the start of the Award in 2015, there were many nominations of quiet Singaporean achievers who do good without any expectation of recognition or rewards. They include a man who build schools and medical centres; a nurse who worked with Ebola patients; and a woman who set up a family violence specialist centre. These individuals taught us the idea of mission, the strength of devotion, and the nature of cause.

The public can nominate people for the award from now until 31 Dec 2017. Nominees must be Singapore citizens who made the news this year.
