Implications for Global Environmentalism

Global climate agreements have long been the trend in global environmentalism. From the formation of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to the Kyoto Protocol, to the historic Paris Agreement, there has been great deal of hype surrounding these mega-agreements. Yet, while these sorts of agreements have their merits, I can’t help but wonder if it may be more effective to put this energy and investment into regional agreements and strategies that align better with shared cultural values. There are some examples of this in North America, but again we see that most of our resources are directed towards global agreements. This is not to say that global consensus is unimportant, these agreements represent massive steps in addressing the global impact of climate change. But, it is to say that we should also be encouraging more tangible and culturally relevant agreements between nations/communities.
