Consequence for humans

These changes in the Mediterranean Basin’s biodiversity and ecosystems, should be alarming to citizens because of the services it  provides for them. These are: provisioning services (e.g. food and fuel), regulating services (e.g. purifying water and controlling erosion), cultural services (e.g sense of place and aesthetics) and supporting services. Therefore, the loss of biodiversity is affecting these regulating services and the environment, which would subsequently impact provisioning services by altering the conditions of the water, marine lives, soil and so on. This is particularly threatening to humans, insofar as it would create insecurity for the fulfillment of physiological and safety needs (Maslow, 1943). Furthermore, the loss of cultural services would impact the ability for individuals to have a natural environment in which they can restore and take care of their physical and mental health (Kaplan, 1995), while changes in the environment can impact individual`s place identity  self-identity (Proshansky, Fabian and Kaminoff, 1983).
