The Mediterranean Basin

The Mediterranean basin is 5 million years old and totals approximately 46,000 km of coastline. The countries that are included in the basin are: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey. The costal population is of 150 million people and costal tourism attracts 200 million people a year.  It houses around 10% of the overall global costal population and is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world. This means that a lot of people have the chance to affect the Mediterranean Sea ad its pollution but also be affected by the consequences of their influence on this biodiversity hotspot and centre of life (Cózar et al., 2015; WWF Report, 2018).
