In the Shadow of Man

In this book Jane Goodall tells the story how she started with her observations in Africa. She tells about her meeting with Louis Leakey whom eventually sent her to Gombe Stream National Park to study chimpanzees. Jane tells about how she became engaged with chimpanzees, what are her main findings and how she spent her first ten years at Gombe. She demonstrates her anthropomorphic approach by writing about the personalities of the chimpanzees as individuals with emotions and thoughts, which was an astounding idea back then. She gives a detailed description of their behavioral patterns, lifestyle and social relations. The notable discoveries led this book not only appreciated by the laity but by scientists as well. It was published in 1971.
