National Environment Agency (NEA)
NEA is the main agency that ensures a clean and green Singapore. They do not directly impact or assist with the formation of green spaces, however they ensure that Singapoarean’s treat the spaces with the care and love it deserves.
Our roots: NEA is a statutory board formed under the ministry of environment and water resources on 1 July 2002. Due to the worsening haze problem in the 1990s, the government saw a need to establish organisation to deal with environmental problems and management. Thus NEA was birthed to tackle the issues of poor air quality and pollution. Later on, the ministry expanded to take on more general roles of environmental monitoring and control.
The people at NEA seeks to engage the public pertaining to environmental cleanliness and sustainability issues. For instance, teaching the public how to responsibly dispose of waste, actively practice the 3Rs (Reduce, reuse, recycle) and adopt greener lifestyles. They do this through different outreach platforms such as campaigns, volunteering opportunities as well as community events. Outreach programs targeted to specific age groups, especially the youths and school going children are also organised by NEA
Till date these are some of the aspects of our living environment which NEA manages:
- Waste management:
- Pollution control
- Recycling
- Energy efficiency
- Radiation protection and nuclear safety
- Public hygiene and cleanliness
