About Nature and Youth

Nature and Youth, in Norwegian: Natur og Ungdom (NU), is the biggest environmental organization for young people in Norway. It consists of almost 8000 members divided into more than 70 local branches, which are working for environmental issues where they live. The organization wants to focus on small and local environmental problems, and says that these together constitute a bigger problem. They want to work on local issues, care for the world’s diversity of species, and limit human made climate issues.

Their most important cases at the moment is (1) to stop oil extraction in the Barents sea, which they will try to stop through climate action in the Norwegian court in November. (2) Their work for an oil free Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja, which are parts of the North of Norway. Here their goal is to turn the political party Arbeiderpartiet (AP), and get their support. If they succeed in doing that, they have won Nature and Youth’s main issue for the last 20 years. (3) To stop mining dumping in Repparfjord. Nussir ASA, a Norwegian mineral company, have gotten an operating license to mining in a reindeer grazing in Finnmark, and to dump 30 million ton of waste into Rapparfjorden. Thousands of people have signed a civil disobedient action list to stop the project. (4) Nature and Youth also engage in the ongoing school strike for climate, started by the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. They encouraged people to strike Friday March 22nd, which resulted in more than 15.000 striking people in Oslo, and 40.000 striking people in the whole country.

Nature and Youth wants to find solutions and give pressure to the Norwegian politicians and corporations to take responsibility for the problems we face, and do what they can to solve them. Nature and Youth says that EVERYONE needs to do something to solve the world’s environmental problems.
