Producer Perspective

In this section, we look at why producers, which in the case, are the hawkers providing takeaway options, are not helping to improve the situation.

In Singapore, takeaway cutlery and containers are too readily-available!

As profit-driven entities, it is not practical for hawkers to stop providing disposable containers and cutlery for takeaway. While hawkers may be able to cut costs on buying additional material if they stop providing takeaway, they also run the risk of losing a large portion of their customer base due to the customers feeling inconvenienced.

To implement a policy of banning or limiting the amount of takeaway products available  island-wide, it is likely that many trials will have to be carried out in order to gauge customer reactions. Even then, hawkers may still feel that providing takeaway options are more profitable and less risky. As such, as long as disposable options are easily available to consumers, it is likely that Singaporeans will not feel any incentive to bring their own containers.
