Taxes and Laws

Taxes and laws would, in theory, curb the undesirable behaviour of relying too much on disposable products when taking food away. The government could ban disposables completely, or make the additional charge on taking food mandatory for all stalls, as well as increase the cost. However, this is likely to cause frustration and displeasure among Singaporeans, and the government is unlikely willing to have to deal with the social costs of such a policy.

A few years ago, a news article by Straits Times reported that there would be no ban on the Styrofoam packaging used by hawkers – but they were strongly discouraged to use it. Even at that time, the government was aware of the inconvenience and increased costs for hawkers and customers alike. Thus, while in theory an effective solution, an outright ban would not be practical.
